On Saturday 12th April, 4 Beaches came together on a miserable rainy day to battle it out for the Buckler To Bra Memorial Teams Challenge.
As the waves were a lot bigger than intended, there seas a slight change to the plans with only 7 surfers from each beach competing as it was too dangerous for all 15 to compete.
With the help of Jesse Pollock on the jet ski for safety, no one was harmed in the making of history with the biggest waves ever competed on in the eastern suburbs. This comp proved that even on a miserable day peoples loyalty to their beach proves stronger than ever and the masses came out to support their team and their mates with a busy Bondi Hill (Scum Valley) full of laughter and rivalry, the day was a massive success.
After 5 hours of surfing, the best wave award being taken by Damien 'Doobs' Black, a celeb appearance from Maroubra's own Mark Matthews, one of worlds best big wave surfers, and a lot of wipe outs. Bronte took the title, beating MSA as they got bonus points for finishing first and Southend pipping Bondi to 3rd place.
At the end of the day each club threw in $500 for Suicide Prevention Australia, which just reminded everyone why we came together, to celebrate and cheers to those who we have lost and raise money and awareness.
FTW would like to thank everyone who turned up and showed their support, Bondi Boardriders and Ray Vuko for letting us put on the event and holding it at their beach. Ian Wallace, Jesse Billington, Brett Anderson, Rod Donoso, Corey Adams, Rich Cass, Jay Brown, Matt Phillips, John Adams, Aaron Graham, Bar 34 and Tiger Beer for helping put the whole thing on.
Thanks and see you next year!!
